La noche del 24 de Febrero 2023 en la ciudad de Los Ángeles, CA y durante la entrega número 54 de los NAACP Image Awards, Bantú Mama de Ivan Herrera, se convierte en la primera película Dominicana en ganar el galardón “Outstanding International Motion Picture” (Mejor Película Internacional) .
El NAACP Image Awards es una ceremonia anual de premios presentada por la Asociación Nacional para el Avance de las Personas de Color (NAACP), que celebra los logros destacados y las actuaciones de las personas afrodescendientes en el cine, la televisión, el teatro, la música y la literatura. Es similar a otros premios, como los Oscar y los Grammys.
Otros ganadores de la noche incluyen a la actriz Angela Bassett (Wakanda Forever), la directora Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) y la leyenda del rap, Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith, entre otros.
Explorando con una perspectiva diferente las identidades de los descendientes de la diáspora africana, Bantú Mama cuenta la historia de Emma, una mujer franco-camerunesa que huye de un arresto por tráfico de drogas en la República Dominicana. Encuentra refugio con tres niños que viven solos en el barrio más peligroso de Santo Domingo. Al convertirse en su protegida y su figura materna, su destino cambiará inexorablemente.
Distribuida por Ava DuVernay’s Array Releasing, la película está disponible en Netflix desde noviembre de 2022 en América del Norte, el Reino Unido, Australia y Nueva Zelanda. Escrita por Ivan Herrera y la actriz francesa Clarisse Albrecht, que también protagoniza la película, Bantú Mama se estrenó en el SXSW en 2021 y se presentó internacionalmente en numerosos festivales de cine (BFI London Film Festival, Fespaco, Durban International Film Festival). Los productores son Herrera, Albrecht, Franmiris Lombert y Nicolas LaMadrid.

From the 21st to the 26th of May Barolo visited the Marché du Film in Cannes to discuss further coproduction projects, partnerships and distribution deals.
Five different outstanding Dominican movies were premiered at the Cannes festival. The development of the island’s film industry is the reason for why the amount of international productions being shot there each year has risen from six to over 20 in no time.
